How often should I flush my tank?
At least once a year for most households. If you have hard water or a large household (6+ people), you should flush it every 4 to 6 months. Use Chromex's Water Heater Tank Flushing products to ensure your tank is up to working standard.
What happens if I never flush my tank?
Sediment (minerals and "scale") builds up at the bottom, acting as an insulator. This forces the burner to work harder, leading to higher energy bills, noisy operation, and eventually a cracked or leaking tank.
Can I flush an old, neglected tank?
Be cautious. If a tank hasn't been maintained for many years, flushing it can sometimes dislodge sediment that was actually "plugging" small corrosion holes, potentially causing a leak.
Why is my water heater making popping or banging noises?
This is often "kettling" caused by sediment buildup. Water gets trapped under the sediment layer, boils, and "pops" as steam bubbles escape. A thorough flush using Chromex products usually fixes this.
Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?
This is typically a reaction between your water's minerals and a failing anode rod, creating hydrogen sulfide gas. Replacing a standard magnesium rod with Chromex's Powered Anode rod or a zinc-aluminum combo rod often solves the smell.
What is an anode rod, and why do I need to check it?
The anode rod is a "sacrificial" metal rod that rusts so your steel tank doesn't. You should inspect it every 2 to 3 years and replace it once it has corroded away by 75% or more. Chromex Anode Rods have varying lifespans, while some may last the lifetime of the tank.
Where is the rod located? I can't see it.
On most heaters, it's on the top of the tank. It looks like a hexagonal bolt (usually 1-1/16 iN) that is slightly off center. Hidden rods: Sometimes it's hidden under a plastic cap or buried beneath the fiberglaqss insulation.
Can I Install the Chromex Anode Rod in tanks with dual anodes?
Yes. If your heater has two anode ports, you can replace one anode at a time. Leaving the other factory anode installed is fine. Inspect and replace anodes as needed based on wear.
Should I unplug Chromex's Powered Anode Rod when I'm away for long periods of time?
You do not need to unplug the device when you are away. If the tank remains full, the rod continues to prevent rust. If you drain the tank, the system shuts off on it's own because the water is no longer there to conduct the current.
