Tankless Water Heater Maintenance FAQ

How often should a tankless hot water heater be flushed?

To keep your tankless water heater running efficiently (and to avoid a sudden, cold shower), the general rule of thumb is to flush it anywhere between every 6 months - once a year. However, like most home maintenance, it depends on the mineral content of your water and your usage patterns. If you live in an area with high mineral content (calcium and magnesium), scale builds up much faster.

Can you use vinegar to descale tankless water heater?

Absolutely. In fact, Chromex's Concentrated Vinegar Solutions are the gold standard for descaling most tankless water heaters. It’s effective enough to dissolve calcium and magnesium deposits (scale) but mild enough that it won't eat through your copper heat exchanger.

How do I know if I need to flush my tankless water heater?

Aside from the "once a year" rule, your water heater will usually start dropping hints when it's struggling with mineral buildup. Such hints include:

  • Error Codes: The display shows a service code (like LC, 551, or E016).

  • Temperature Fluctuations: Hot water randomly turns cold or won't stay consistent.

  • Low Pressure: Hot water flows much slower than cold water.

  • Strange Noises: You hear banging, popping, or rumbling during operation.

  • White Residue: You see chalky buildup on your faucets or showerheads.

  • Increased Bills: Your gas or electric costs are rising for no clear reason.

Do all tankless water heaters need descaling?

Nearly all tankless water heaters require regular descaling to remove mineral buildup. While this is a standard, there are a few exceptions, like heaters with built-in prevention technologies or your home's water setup.

Can you run CLR through a tankless water heater?

While you can use CLR (Calcium, Lime, and Rust Remover) in some cases, it is generally not recommended as a first choice for tankless water heaters. If you need something stronger than standard vinegar, consider Chromex's concentrated vinegar or descaling solutions.
